A drilling machine is one of the most indispensable processing equipment in machinery workshops. Its core purpose is to fabricate round holes on workpieces. Beyond basic punching, it integrates multiple practical auxiliary functions to ensure processed holes are precise, smooth and efficient. This article sorts out the core basic functions of industrial drilling machine for beginners to quickly master operational essentials.

Radial Drilling Machine

1. Core Drilling Mechanism

1.1 Spindle Rotation

The spindle clamps and drives the drill bit to rotate, with rotation speed measured in RPM. The speed needs to be adjusted according to workpiece materials: high speed for soft materials such as wood and aluminum, and low speed for hard steel materials. Most devices realize speed switching via a belt or adjustment dial.

1.2 Spindle Feed

Feed refers to the downward movement of a rotating drill bit into materials. Small drilling machines adopt manual lever feeding, while large equipment is equipped with automatic power feed. A reasonable feed rate avoids bit breakage caused by excessive speed and low processing efficiency caused by too slow speed.

1.3 Depth Control & Quill Travel

Equipped with a depth stop, the machine can fix the drilling depth to ensure consistent depth of multiple holes without repeated measurement. The quill carrying the spindle controls the effective downward moving distance of the drill bit (conventional travel: 4-6 inches). For deeper holes, adjust the machine head or worktable.

2. Workpiece Fixation & Positioning

2.1 Table Adjustment

The worktable is used to place workpieces, supporting up-down height adjustment; some models are tiltable to adapt to different processing requirements. For radial drills, the table is usually fixed, and the drilling position is adjusted by moving the machine head.

2.2 Clamping and Workholding

Firm fixation of workpieces is the premise of safe drilling. Small parts are fixed by a vise, while large workpieces are directly clamped on the table. The T-slots on the table are compatible with standard clamps to prevent workpiece displacement during processing.

3. Common Precision Drilling Processes

3.1 Center Drilling

Drill a tiny positioning pilot hole before machining large holes. The short and rigid center drill marks a dimple to prevent the large drill bit from offsetting and improve hole position accuracy.

3.2 Peck Drilling

Ideal for deep hole processing. The drill bit repeatedly moves up and down to discharge internal cutting chips, effectively solving the problems of bit overheating and fracture caused by chip accumulation. Modern drilling machines are generally equipped with automatic peck drilling cycles.

3.3 Reaming

The secondary finishing process after drilling. A reamer is used to remove a small amount of residual material on the hole wall, optimizing the smoothness and dimensional accuracy of the hole.

3.4 Tapping

Used for internal thread processing. The equipment drives the tap to screw into the reserved hole to cut threads, and automatically reverses to exit the tap, which is more efficient than manual tapping.

4. Hole Shaping & Surface Processing

  • Countersinking: Machine a conical recess at the hole mouth to make flat-head screws flush with the workpiece surface.
  • Counterboring: Process a flat-bottom recess to accommodate bolt heads and keep them below the material surface.
  • Spot Facing: Polish a flat smooth area around the hole to provide a stable fitting surface for gaskets and bolt heads.

5. Special Type Drilling Machine Functions

5.1 Gang Drilling

Equipped with multiple parallel spindles, different drill bits can be installed on each spindle. Workpieces are transferred to different stations to complete multi-process drilling, suitable for batch processing of parts with multiple holes.

5.2 Radial Drilling

The swingable mechanical arm and movable machine head eliminate the need to displace heavy workpieces. The drill bit can be positioned arbitrarily, adapting to large-size workpiece processing.

5.3 Sensitive Drilling

Operators sense the cutting state through the feed lever, which is convenient for fine processing of fragile tiny drill bits to reduce bit breakage rate.
